2019 Fall Bike to Work Week

Salt Spring & Other Gulf Islands

New-to-us is BIKE TO SCHOOL

Friday, May 4, 2018

New to the Gulf Islands this year is Bike-to-School for kids. Jenny Redpath with Island Health and the Salt Spring Elementary PAC are working with me to organize some bike safety and fun activities at Salt Spring Elementary for Thursday morning, May 31st before school. We'll have snacks for everyone, a helmet decorating station (with stickers and pens like below), and some kind of playground bike course.

I let my 7-year-old daughter bike to school on her own now, but we are one of the few to live just a few blocks away with no heavy traffic roads en route. Commonly on Salt Spring, the response to kids biking to school is that it is just far too dangerous for them on our narrow roads with fast cars. Other ideas for Bike-to-School are to set up a few safe routes for young bicyclists with cones along the road, warning sandwich boards that kids are biking, and/or volunteer flaggers to slow down traffic.

Safety vests and other bright and reflective gear is available here: http://www.dontgethit.com/

Do you have other ideas?
