Bike to School - Get Your School Involved

1. Register Your School

The first step to participating in Fall GoByBike Weeks is registering your school. Click here, or on the grey button in the top-right hand corner of this page, to get signed up.

2. Gather Support and Promote

It’s never too early to get planning. Find out who your supporters are: talk to students, parents, PAC members and school staff. If your school has a green team, bike club, leadership group, sustainability or health and wellness committee, get them involved too.

Add GoByBike Week to your school calendar, and include information in school newsletters, facebook pages, and morning announcements to create a buzz.

3. Plan Your Event

Every school community is different and celebrates GoByBike Weeks in its own way. You can make the event as small or big as you like -- the important thing is to encourage and celebrate cycling! Some schools also choose to track other forms of active transportation like walking, scootering, or skateboarding to make sure everyone has a chance to participate.

Here are some event ideas to get you started are:

  • Host a bikers’ breakfast
  • Organize a bike decoration station and/or parade
  • Invite local experts to provide bike safety talks or lessons in the classroom
  • Hold a bike rodeo, or other cycling skills or safety activity, at your school
  • Organize a group ride
  • Reach out to local volunteers or a bike shop to provide bike checks or tune-ups at your school
  • Get parents together to organize a bike-pool or bicycle train

4. Track Your Trips

Once GoByBike Week rolls around, set up your tracking poster with an eye-catching display at the front entrance of the school.

5. Report Back

We want to hear about your week! Reporting helps us demonstrate the impact of GoByBike Week to funders to receive continued support for future events. Please send your GoByBike Week story and a picture of your tracking poster to biketowork@nanaimo.ca by June 10.
